Pause to Remember

By Michael Lodge

This evening I went to church, as I do each week to pray.  As I knelt down I could hear the piano in the background gently playing America.  This song always brings goosebumps and tears to my eyes.  It represents what America is all about on Memorial day.  I don’t think there is another country that has a song that tells the story of their country like the story of america, those who have fallen for you and me.  America is truly beautiful.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
for amber waves of grain;
for purple mountain majesties
above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood
from sea to shining sea.

O beautiful for heroes proved
in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved,
and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
till all success be nobleness,
and every gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years thine alabaster cities gleam,
undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw,
confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law.
